Piracy’s preserving effect, while little known, is actually nothing new. Through the centuries, the tablets, scrolls, and books that people copied most often and distributed most widely survived to the present. Libraries everywhere would be devoid of Homer, Beowulf, and even The Bible without unauthorized duplication.
Provocative read on why history needs software piracy. Reminiscent of the story of how the widely pirated first edition of Arabian Nights made it one of the most influential pieces of storytelling in history. (via austinkleon)

And, lo - my day was brightened! And I saw that it was good.

Hmmm, how old were you when you started to play the violin?

I was in the 4th grade. I was just looking for a good reason to get out of class for an hour a week. I had no idea that it’d turn out to be a life-long thing. Go figure.

WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST HUMAN MEMORY?

And so the tumblrbot asks me a question!

I remember making little shouting noises in my room and listening to the echo. I’d talk, shout, and clap my hands and listen to how the room would respond. I don’t know exactly how old I was but we moved out of that house right around my 4th birthday. I must have been three or so.

For the new year, something different.

Hey all,

For the past 6 years I’ve been a part of a fantastic band and have met some amazing and talented people. I’ve played some of the most fun shows of my career as a musician. I’ve gotten the opportunity to be a part of an artistic and cultural movement that is taking the world by storm.

Alas, like all good things, my time with Abney Park is coming to an end. I wish the band all the best and am certain of their continued success. To the band, the fans, and everyone else in the world of Steampunk, I give my most heartfelt thanks for all of the wonderful experiences and memories. I’ve had a lot of fun, and you guys are awesome!

Why am I doing this, you ask?

Well, my muse has been calling to me, pulling me in new directions. In the past I’ve pushed her into the background and that’s worked fairly well. But she’s been more insistent lately and it’s time for me to listen to her.

I’m going to be embarking on some new musical adventures in the coming year. I’m not altogether certain where they will lead me but I intend to dive in and find out. I hope that you’ll come along for the ride! If you are interested in seeing what emerges from my meanderings, keep an eye on nathanieljohnstone.com.

I went to a show this weekend that really got me thinking about how our culture is changing. Granted, getting me noodling about cultural change is about as difficult as getting a hungry dog to pay attention to the steak you just pulled off the grill, but this experience was worthy of particular…
